History

The Totally Kids organization was established in 1971 as a family business with the vision of providing a better place for children with disabilities to reside. At that same time, the state of California was looking for ways to serve people with disabilities in smaller, community-based facilities. These two initiatives would soon intertwine in one common mission focused on providing innovative and compassionate care for children with special needs. It has been a collaboration that has lasted for nearly 50 years, highlighted by these milestone events:

1971 – Educators Jim and Mary Lou Hooyenga purchase a small house that was operating as a "nursery" for babies with developmental disabilities and establish Mountain View Child Care Center.
Mid-1970s – Jim consults with the state of California to develop new models of care for the disabled. These include the Intermediate Care Facility for the Developmentally Disabled (ICF-DD), ICF-DD(H) (habilitative emphasis) and ICF-DD(N) (nursing emphasis). He and his family believed so much in the cause, they found capital for building nearly 60 homes using these models of care. Two 15-bed ICF facilities (Oaktree and Circlebrook) are built on the Loma Linda campus.
1984 – Mountain View Child Care forms New Horizon Care Corporation and begins exploring new models of care for children as alternatives to acute hospitals or outdated developmental centers.
1991 – The organization receives a major grant from the Department of Developmental Disabilities to create a new level of care: pediatric subacute. A major remodel begins at Mountain View Child Care Center, now an ICF-DD facility in Loma Linda.
1993 – Doug Padgett, with a background in building and opening subacute and senior care facilities, consults with the company to determine the appropriate licensure for pediatric subacute levels of service. A year later Doug is named president and CEO of Mountain View Child Care Center.
1994 – The hospital is licensed as a skilled nursing facility (SNF) and enters into the first pediatric subacute contract with the state Medi-Cal program.
1997 – Mountain View Child Care Center changes its name to Totally Kids Specialty Healthcare. Management and clinical staff begin collecting and analyzing data to improve the quality of service for medically fragile infants and children.
1999 – A research paper titled "Interaction Between a Pediatric Subacute Facility and the Emergency Medical Services" is presented at the American Medical Directors Association annual convention by the Totally Kids medical director. This brings national attention to Totally Kids and the work we are doing to make children’s lives better.
2001 – Totally Kids applies for and receives a major grant from the Children & Families Commission of San Bernardino County providing for the start-up expenses for the West Coast premiere of a blended child care center/preschool on the Totally Kids campus. KidShip is established.
2007 – Construction begins to expand Totally Kids to include acute rehabilitation.
2014 – Totally Kids opens its new general acute care hospital and launches acute rehabilitation program to provide inpatient and outpatient services for children with neurological and pulmonary issues.
2017 – Totally Kids introduces the revolutionary EKSO Bionic Exoskeleton, which allows patients to perform movements and utilize muscles they usually do not utilize or execute due to spinal cord injury, stroke, or other conditions or disorders
