In December, we shared a link on our Facebook page of a video filmed on our campus by an NBC affiliate, which featured an update on a very special subacute resident, 5-year old Aiden Inman. The video presented Aiden’s progress and focused on how his family was preparing for Aiden’s possible discharge in the month of December and prior to Christmas.
Although Aiden was not able to be discharged in December, he did go back home in the middle of February. There were several appointments with different medical specialists that had to take place before Aiden could go home.
For Aiden’s family being able to get him home was very meaningful. Just a year before Aiden was so sick that doctors at the referring hospital did not think they could do anything more for him. Their prognosis was very grim. Aiden had contracted a rare fungal infection called mucormycosis, which produced inflammation on the left side of his head.
The doctors were perplexed since this type of infection usually affects individuals with a severely compromised immune system, but before the infection Aiden had been a perfectly healthy preschooler.
After going through several brain surgeries at the hospital of origin, Aiden was transferred to Totally Kids where he continued to beat the odds by experiencing a marked improvement. The inflammation to his head became reduced, something that many in the medical community did not consider possible.
In the past, Aiden’s mother, Dina, has likened Totally Kids to a bridge between the hospital and home. Aiden is now enjoying the company of his loving family, including his little brother, who always puts a smile on his face. We were blessed to have been a part of Aiden’s recovery and to have been the bridge that got him home.
