Celebrating 27 Years of the Olmstead Decision

On the 27th anniversary of the Olmstead Decision, we pause to recognize a landmark moment in disability rights and celebrate the progress it continues to inspire across the nation.

Issued by the United States Supreme Court in 1999, the Olmstead Decision affirmed that individuals with disabilities have the right to receive services and supports in the most integrated setting appropriate to their needs. The decision reinforced the belief that every person deserves the opportunity to participate fully in their community, build meaningful relationships, and live with dignity, choice, and inclusion.

At Totally Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, this principle remains at the heart of the care we provide every day. We understand that children with complex medical needs often face barriers that can impact their development, independence, and ability to return home. Our interdisciplinary team is committed to reducing those barriers through compassionate, individualized care that supports each child’s unique strengths, goals, and potential.

Whether a child is working toward improved mobility, communication, social engagement, daily living skills, or medical stability, every milestone matters. Through therapeutic recreation, child development services, rehabilitation therapies, education, nursing care, and family-centered support, we strive to create opportunities for growth, participation, and meaningful experiences that enhance quality of life.

The Olmstead Decision reminds us that inclusion is not simply a goal, but a responsibility. It challenges all of us to continue building communities and systems of care that recognize the abilities, value, and potential of every individual.

Today, we honor the courage and advocacy of Lois Curtis and Elaine Wilson, whose voices helped shape a more inclusive future for people with disabilities. Their legacy continues to inspire our commitment to empowering children and families, supporting meaningful progress, and helping every child move closer to home, community, and the opportunities they deserve.

As we commemorate this important anniversary, Totally Kids proudly reaffirms our dedication to providing compassionate care, promoting inclusion, and lifting up every child and family we are privileged to serve.
