Therapeutic Garden Update

We are excited to share a construction update as our therapeutic garden is taking shape! Concrete has been poured for the sidewalks, patio and main entrance. These sidewalks will provide a pathway that will go all the way around the garden; including the fruit trees that were planted last month. 

“When the project is complete, these walkways will allow our patients, guests and staff to enjoy the different areas of our beautiful new garden,” said Pauline Hennessey, Vice President of Child Development, Education and Rehabilitation Services at Totally Kids. “We are calling it our ‘Garden of Fun’; but we know that, in reality, it will be so much more than that.”

The new therapeutic garden will give our patients a positive experience during their care. It will also foster their ability to interact with nature and work on functional activities in a safe environment. Just as a stroll outside on a sunny day is a great pick-me-up, many healthcare researchers and practitioners are finding that Ecotherapy can have a positive effect in the rehab process.

The new garden at Totally Kids will serve as a destination for patients to enjoy the outdoors with both staff and their parents. Some patients may receive therapy in this setting to help improve their balance, walking, and other life skills. The garden will also be a place where employees can take their own children, grow fruits and vegetables, or just rest and relax.   

The Totally Kids Therapy Garden was the vision of board members Don Nydam and his wife Ruth Ann. Don served as our Chairman of the Board for many years until he passed away earlier this month. In addition to his service on the Board, Don was also a long-time community leader. This garden represents their vision to create a beautiful, tranquil spot on the Totally Kids’ campus. This garden is a collaborative community effort. To date it includes contributions from master gardeners, along with many others who have donated their time, energy and money to support this project.
