Hello Andrew!
A few days ago we had a very special visitor stop by Totally Kids to say hello!
We met Andrew Castillo when he was a 17 year old high school student who had suffered a traumatic brain injury while playing football. Growing up, Andrew had hoped to one day become a professional football player. In fact, his dream was to be part of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football family. Playing for Notre Dame was a dream Andrew took very seriously and for which he prepared constantly every time he stepped foot on the field. Although his injury was life-changing and his football dreams were shattered, this did not stop Andrew from being a sweet, caring, and loving person; which he continues to be to this day. Needless to say, we were thrilled when Andrew stopped by to say hello! During his visit Andrew caught up with the nurses and respiratory therapists with whom he formed a close bond with during his time at Totally Kids.
During his visit, Andrew shared with us an inspiring video that was created for him by the High Hopes Head Injury Program. The purpose of the video was to gather a large number of people: family, friends, and members of the community, to pay Andrew a warm Christmas visit. They all wanted to make sure Andrew knew how much love and appreciation they had for him. Andrew’s parents worked together with the High Hopes Program and kept the visit a secret while it was being planned.
On the day of the visit, Andrew’s mom, Maria, told him there was someone at the door looking for him. When he opened the door, he was shocked to see so many smiling faces shouting, “Surprise!” Confetti was shot into the air, and both Santa and Mrs. Claus took turns hugging, and even dancing with Andrew. He couldn’t have been happier. You can see entire heartwarming video below, or visit https://youtu.be/5EYTEFRTDe8.
We were very happy to see Andrew again and grateful for the video he shared with us. Andrew, come back and see us again soon! Having former residents come by to say hello makes our TK hearts happy!
