Window Visits with Heroes

Earlier this month we had a very special visit at Totally Kids. It all started when Dr. Terry Nelson reached out to our Recreation Therapy Assistant, Raisa Pinkney, to collaborate with the Rialto Police Department. The goal was to give a donation to Totally Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. Neither of them could have imagined the outpouring of love and support that would be received from local law enforcement.

Dr. Nelson’s son, Lieutenant CJ Nelson with the Rialto Police Department, spearheaded this mission of giving. When it became clear that his annual Youth Camp Pride Platoon Camp was to be cancelled this summer due to COVID 19, Lieutenant Nelson knew that funds that normally go towards the camp could make a tremendous difference for the children at Totally Kids. With the help of Child Development Director Kris Million, Raisa and Lieutenant Nelson worked together to devise a plan to give a monetary donation to Totally Kids. This donation would help parents stay connected with their child while maintaining social distancing guidelines.

On May 6th, Lieutenant Nelson informed Raisa that the Rialto Police Department would not only be donating funds to Totally Kids but the Rialto Police Department would also like to provide a memorable visit for the children and Totally Kids staff. It was a very exciting day when the parade of police squad cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and even a police tank arrived on campus! Meeting our local law enforcement heroes, even while maintaining social distancing protocols through our window visits, put the biggest smiles on the faces of our Subacute residents and Totally Kids staff. The Rialto Police Department awarded a check to Totally Kids CEO, Doug Padgett. This donation will go towards helping parents communicate with their children while maintaining social distancing.

We are hopeful that once COVID 19 restrictions have been lifted that the Rialto Police Department can return to our campus. We all look forward to that day!
