Ava Beckham

When Ava was first admitted to Totally Kids, she was a quiet and cautious two-year-old with a diagnosis of short bowel syndrome and a failure to thrive. She was not yet walking, struggled with oral intake, and had limited energy. Mobility was a challenge, and eating was difficult-but even then, our team could see something powerful in her resilience.

From the very beginning, Ava’s mother was a committed partner in her care. Together with our therapists, nurses, and medical providers, we created a plan focused on building strength, trust, and engagement. With consistency and compassion, Ava began to take meaningful steps forward-literally and figuratively.

She tolerated standing without support, started reaching for toys, and eventually began taking steps. Her participation in daily routines grew, and though she remains non-ambulatory and dependent on tube feeding, her energy has improved, and her interest in exploring food has grown.

But the most powerful transformation wasn’t tied to a single milestone-it was her spirit. Ava began smiling more, engaging more, speaking more, and trying more. Each day revealed more of the vibrant, determined little girl she’s becoming.

Her mother reflected on the changes she’s witnessed, saying that “not only me, but my family and friends have seen so much growth in her-physically, emotionally, and socially. She’s so much more confident, expressive, and curious.” She added, “Totally Kids made her-and me- believe. I’m truly amazed at how far she’s come.”

More than progress, Ava’s family found peace of mind.

“Tk gave me peace of mind by creating a space where my child was truly seen and supported by so many people-her nurses, therapists, doctors, even some who weren’t her direct caregivers. They all loved her. Just knowing the environment, she was in gave me the best feeling anyone could ever feel, especially when she’s away from home.”

This sense of trust and community has meant the world to Ava’s family. “I feel like we’re part of a community that’s working with us,” her mother shared. “My advice to other families is to trust the process. Things don’t happen overnight, but they will get better in time. Give your child space to adjust and grow on their own terms- every child is different, and TK honors that beautifully in everything they do.”

Ava still has a long road ahead, but her journey is already full of growth, courage, and hope. We are honored to have been a part of her story–and inspired every day by the joy, strength, and potential she brings with her.
