Haircut Day at Totally Kids is one of those simple things that ends up meaning a lot.
It is easy to think of a haircut as routine, but for our residents, it is really a form of self care. It is a chance to slow down, be cared for, and focus on something that is just for them.
In a setting where so much of their day is structured around medical care and treatment, moments like this stand out. Sitting down for a haircut, feeling their hair brushed and styled, having someone take that extra time with them, it brings a different kind of comfort.
For some residents, it helps them feel more like themselves again. For others, it builds confidence. Even small changes can make a big difference in how they feel when they look in the mirror.
There is also something calming about the whole experience. The routine, the gentle touch, the one on one attention. It can help regulate emotions and create a sense of ease, especially for residents who benefit from sensory input.
Haircut Day also creates connection. Residents talk, laugh, and notice each other’s new looks. Staff get to spend more personal time with them. It turns into a shared experience that lifts the energy in the room.
At the end of the day, self care does not have to be big or complicated. Sometimes it looks like a fresh haircut, a little extra attention, and the feeling of being cared for in a way that is personal. And those moments go a long way.
Thank you to Uppercuts Barbershop in Loma Linda for coming to Totally Kids each month and taking such great care of our residents. We truly appreciate you.
